Mark Foy Trophy

03/07/09

And the wind came !

After a rest and relaxation day that has enabled the competitors to try the charms of Carnac, the Mark Foy Trophy started again this Thursday. The wind had been quite light these days but the bay of Quiberon has been up to its reputation and the show offered by the teams has been quite simply splendid.

It's around 3.30pm that the 30 teams of the Mark Foy Trophy left for the race. During the first race, after a general recall, two favourites of the regatta, Asko and Macquarie went over the starting line and have logically been declared OCS. It's then Grant Rollerson on Slam who once again made his presence felt and leaves his mark on this competition. Behind, the competitors led by Greenhalgh (Benny) and Trevor Barnabas (24HrRoad), can only notice once again that it will be hard to deprive Slam of a victory during this Mark Foy Trophy - except new development.

But as always in sailing and sports, surprises come quick... And even more in 18 foot skiffs, where the slightest technical mistake is immediately sanctioned by a capsizing. During the start under black flag for the second race of the day and with a 16 to 18 knots wind, Slam collided with two other boats, including John Winning's Yandoo, and gave up this race. With an OCS and a DNF, he will need three other races to be run to be sure to win this event. In these selective conditions, Rob Greenhalgh has shown his talent and imposed himself decisively. At the end, he takes the lead of this competition in front of Dan Wilson (Asko) and Howie Hamlin. The provisional podium reinforces the sports lawfulness of this new international competition for the 18 foot skiffs.

But because a regatta it's also an atmosphere and a spirit, we should point out the solemn tribute paid by the Carnac Yacht Club and by the competitors to Jack Ramecourt, the race committee president, during Tuesday's diner. At 79 years old, Jack officiates since the first edition of the 18 foot skiffs in Carnac, 10 years ago. He symbolizes the beautiful links between the 18 foot skiffs and the Carnac Yacht Club.
